Hear that noise? It’s the sound of schadenfreude in action as the hollow laughter of members of the media industry and consumers alike echoes around deserted marble halls and the empty hanging gardens that, it is rumoured, exist out there in that under-used paradise somewhere on the other side of the Times paywall. Martyn Warwick reports.
It was with his usual braggadocio when, back in March, Rupert Murdoch announced that he was going to make Internet users pay to see the content of the Times.
Now, the Times might be one of the most venerable and respected newspapers on the planet but trying to make people pay to read something on screen when they can get the same information for free elsewhere on the Web is one hell of a gamble, and so far – admittedly only a few weeks of the paywall being in operation – indications are that Murdoch’s bet isn’t paying off.
